MY LIFE: TRUE STORIES IN PICTURES "His Kisses were Tainted"

We begin the new year as we ended the old one...
...continuing our tribute to comics legend Wally Wood with another never-reprinted tale from the Golden Age of Comics!
Best-known as a horror and sci-fi artist with a penchant for illustrating beautiful women, Wally Wood's early output had quite a bit of romance comics work, much of it not seen since first publication, like this story from Fox's My Life: True Stories in Pictures #10 (1949).
And, since it was done before the Comics Code Authority eliminated most adult-level content in comics after the juvenile delinquency scare of the 1950s, the subject matter was on the level of the b-movies of the era, often a bit hard-edged and tawdry.
BTW, the reason the first page is only black and red is that it's the inside cover of the comic.which was printed in only two colors instead of the four colors (Cyan Magenta Yellow and Black) used on the front/back covers and interiors of books as a cost-saving measure.
(Most publishers just used black ink and no color on inside covers to save even more money!)
As a special project from now through Valentine's Day we're running a series of these never-reprinted tales taken directly from the original comics, alternating them with our ongoing soap opera Reach for Happiness!
Next week:
The Return of Reach for Happiness...
You'll Cry Your Eyes Out if You Miss It!

MY LOVE MEMOIRS "My Secret Husband"

Let's end the year with the torrid tale of...
...a never-reprinted story from the Golden Age by comics legend Wally Wood!
Telling the truth leads to your mother (who was on her deathbed) both surviving and moving in with you?
That's a happy ending?
Best-known as a horror and sci-fi artist with a penchant for illustrating beautiful women, Wally Wood's early output had quite a bit of romance comics work, much of it not seen since first publication, like this story from Fox's My Love Memoirs #9 (1949).
And, since it was done before the Comics Code Authority eliminated most adult-level content in comics after the juvenile delinquency scare of the 1950s, the subject matter was on the level of the b-movies of the era, often a bit hard-edged and tawdry.
As a special project from now through Valentine's Day we're running a series of these never-reprinted tales taken directly from the original comics, alternating them with our ongoing soap opera Reach for Happiness!
Next week:
We haven't decided yet what it'll be, but we can guarantee that...
You'll Cry Your Eyes Out if You Miss It!

LOVELORN "My Heart Went Astray"

It's amazing how few Christmas-themed romance comic stories there are...
...so we'll have to go with this tale of greed and vanity set during a winter vacation!
So, everything works out hunky-dory...except for poor Fallon!
Poor guy just can't catch a break...
This never-reprinted tale of love (of money) appeared in ACG's LoveLorn #4 (1950) and is typical of the era with its' "woman who must be shown the error of her ways before she can find true love" plotline.
Though both the writer and artist are unknown, it's fair to guess that Editor Richard E Hughes plotted and/or scripted the tale.
Next week:
We haven't decided yet what it'll be, but we can guarantee that...
You'll Cry Your Eyes Out if You Miss It!

REACH FOR HAPPINESS Episode 4 Part 2

Karen and Peggy leave the Smathers' party and go to the Crystal Club, where they see...Greg and Rita!
Meanwhile,  irresponsible teen Wally Smathers drag-races with his sportscar-riding buddies and cracks up both their car and his grandfather's Rolls-Royce...
We'll return to Danville Corners in January.
BTW: This chapter of "Reach for Happiness" from Secret Hearts #113 (1966) was written by Jack Miller, penciled by Gene Colan, and inked by Colan with what appears to be an assist (or test) from Tom Palmer who was just breaking into the industry at this point.
Next Week...
We haven't decided yet what it'll be, but we can guarantee that...
