STILL STAR-CROSSED aka Romeo and Juliet: the Next Generation

You have to give Shonda Rhimes credit for chutzpah...
..it isn't many people who would try to do a live-action sequel to Romeo and Juliet!
An update, yes!
Lord knows they've been done to death!
But a sequel???
Now that's chutzpah!
(BTW, Romeo and Juliet are dead!
None of that "look, we were wrong, they're still alive" BS!)
To be fair, the series is based on a kool, popular YA book by Melinda Taub, and Shonda decided to carry the fact that R&J was the prototype for the soap operas of today to its' logical conclusion, making a soap opera out of it, using Taub's book as the launching pad!
But does it work?
As Dynasty-style soap opera, definitely!
As a sequel to the original story, sort of!
As a historically-accurate period piece, it's on the level of Hercules: the Legendary Journeys!
It is enjoyable, campy fun!
But, hopefully, it'll inspire teens and 'tweens to search out the original R&J in any of the many formats it's available in...like this comics adaptation...
Sadly, ABC has moved Still Star-Crossed from Monday to the "death slot" of Saturday nights beginning July 8, so it looks like they'll "burn it off" and let the show fade into obscurity.
Watch or DVR it before it disappears!

TIPPY TEEN "Make Mine Romance"

...now let's see how 1960s comics characters react to the Bard's words and concepts!
This never-reprinted tale from Tower's Tippy Teen #25 (1969) is probably based (as are many of the other Tippy tales) on stories originally written for Archie's Ginger and Candy series!

ROMEO & JULIET Conclusion

You really expected me to paraphrase Shakespeare?
Geez, I'm not that egotistical!
Verily, let us returneth to the tale...
This it not the Classics Illustrated version, but part of the Famous Authors Illustrated series that competed with CI for the "comic book adaptation of classics" market for several years.
This particular edition, from Famous Authors Illustrated #10 (1950), was adapted by St John romance comics scribe Dana Dutch and illustrated by longtime CI contributor H C Kiefer!

ROMEO & JULIET Part 2

Verily, things doth not be copacetic in Verona!
Pray, let us behold the love-smitten swain and the lovely object of his affections ...
Verily, ye didn't know Shakespeare invented the soap opera, dids't thou?

The Famous Authors line was doing pretty well, so Classics did what any business would do when faced by a successful competitor...they eliminated the competiton by buying the company!

ROMEO & JULIET Part 1

With the recent return of All My Children and One Life to Live...
...what else could I do except present the greatest love story of all time?
Plus, if any of you need a crash course in Shakespeare's classic for finals...here it is!
Don't you just hate when that happens?
