Romance on the Range FRONTIER ROMANCE "Ropin' in a Wild Cowpoke"

A new reality series, Farmer Wants a Wife, is about four farm/ranch owners seeking a mate.
And, to tell the truth, they sound a helluva lot like this guy!
Illustrated by Ed Waldman, this tale from Avon's Frontier Romances #1 (1949) starts out transactional, but turns emotional by the end.
BTW, in regard to Fox's Farmer Wants a Wife reality series, the show plays up the "rancher/cowboy" aspects while playing down the "farmer" aspects of the lifestyle.
Wonder why?

Amourous Education CAMPUS ROMANCES "Love was My College Major"

It's time for your lesson in love...
...from a writer who takes the "book" part of "comic book" to the extreme!
Considering letterers have always been among the poorest-paid of the various contributors to comics, I wouldn't be surprised if whoever did this job said "The hell with it! I'd rather dig ditches. It'll be easier!" after finishing the assignment.
The art for this tale from Avon's Campus Romances #2 (1949) by Manny Stallman and John Guinta tries to compete with the text, but some panels look like the illustration was just an afterthought.
The script, by an author whose name is lost in the mists of history, reads like a radio soap opera, with an incredible amount of "internal monologue" by Karen.

Amorous Education CAMPUS ROMANCES "One Way Romance"

If you thought last week's story about a girl falling for a guy who looked like a younger version of her father was weird...

...wait until you see this little tale!

Yeah, waiting until she graduates to marry won't get any tongues wagging!
I can see the first faculty get-together after the wedding...
"Hi, Professor Banner!
Congratulations on your nuptials!
Odd, your lovely bride looks so...familiar?"
"Oh, she was in your European Classical Literature class last semester, Professor Warren!"
Illustrated by Jerry Grandenetti, and scripted by an unknown author, this never-reprinted story from Avon's Campus Romances #2 (1950) is an interesting insight as to what was "polticially-correct" back then!

PHANTOM WITCH DOCTOR "Death Came Dancing"

As a Halloween treat (no trick), here's a tale about true love from beyond the grave...
...as presented in a classic 1950s horror comic!
This tale appeared in the 1952 one-shot comic anthology Phantom Witch Doctor by Avon Comics.
Both the writer and artist are unknown and the story has never been reprinted.
 Happy Halloween, everyone!

TENDER LOVE STORIES / REALISTIC ROMANCES "I Deceived My Love"

When I first saw this tale in the back of Skywald's Tender Love Stories #3 (1971)...
...I knew it was "off", but I couldn't quite figure out how or why!
With sales falling on most non-superhero genres in the late 1960s (including Western and war as well as romance), this "updated reprinting" became a common practice on romance comics until the genre all-but died out in the late 1970s.
Publishers would do a new 6-12 page lead story and use retouched reprints (updating clothing and hairstyles) to fill out the book.
Editors felt that:
a) the plots were relatively timeless.
b) updating the art was cheaper than totally-redrawing the story.
c) the artists were better-utilized doing stuff that sold better (like superheroes).
d) the audience for romance comics, unlike superhero comics, totally-changed every 5-6 years anyway, and wouldn't notice the "old" plots.
(Note: you can see the new tale this reworked story backs-up HERE!)
Note that none of the captions or dialogue were rewritten/updated, so the reference to Hal's sister dying in "the first war" on page 3 didn't make sense to a Vietnam War-era reader in 1971!
(But it would to a post-WWII-era reader because it references World War I!)
Ironically, this tale required more redrawing than most!
Bill Everett not only had to do the usual "updating" on people, but on vehicles and technology as well!
Here's the original, Rafael Astarita-rendered story from Avon's Realistic Romances #4 (1952)...
Though published in 1952, the tale was written/illustrated several years earlier and tossed into this anthology with little concern for timeliness!
In fact, look at the inside cover/contents page...
This story is described in the lower right corner...with an illustration that has nothing to do with the tale!

REALISTIC ROMANCES "Thrill Crazy"

When bad girls become even worse...
...there will be hell to pay, as seen in this tale from Avon's Realistic Romances #16 (1954).
The entire issue is more a crime comic than a romance comic.
The other tale we've run from that issue featured both unrestrained necking and "reefer" aka "mary jane" aka (gasp) "pot"!
Trivia:
This story was from the second run of Realistic Romances which ran #15-#17.
The first series ran from #1-#8.
A third series from another publisher ran #1, then #8-#9!
So if you're looking to collect this title, there's no #10-#14, but two #1s and #8s!
