SUGAR BOWL COMICS "Ginny in 'I Hate Men!' "

Why can't hating men be fun?
This never-reprinted entry in the teen humor genre from Eastern Color's Sugar Bowl Comics #2 (1948) answers the question!
Ginny Lambert was the comic's lead character, and disappeared when the book was cancelled after only five issues!
None of the title's stories have ever been reprinted, and we intend to correct that oversight in the future.
Illustrated by Gerald "Jerry" Fasano, who worked in the business from 1949 to 1959, then disappeared.
Whether he passed away or simply switched to another profession is unknown, as is the scripter of this tale.

Love is a Prison ALL TRUE ROMANCE "Love Blind"

There's a cliche about how "girls love bad boys"...
...and Sally Jones is about to discover how "bad" a boy Ace Miller is...and how he'll prove Love is a Prison!
The scripter for this never-reprinted story from Comic Media's All True Romance #9 (1953) is unknown, and the art is by the staff of the Iger Studio, who provided editorial and art services to small publishers who didn't have their own creatives.
So, we don't know who to credit (or blame) for this particular tale.
Note: as of the next issue, the publisher began producing their own material using a mix of established and new/upcoming writers and artists who created a unique look and tone for their entire line (not just the romance books) until the company's demise two years later due to the industry-shaking "Seduction of the Innocent" mania of the mid-1950s.

Anything BUT Archie CLUB 16 COMICS "Heavens to Betsy! Wheel of Betsy's Zodiac"

Here's a never-reprinted story from Eastern Color's Club 16 Comics #1 (1948)...
...starring the character who was cover-featured on three of the four issues of the comic!
Presumably, the "Indian Sign" he's referring to is something like this...
...since Native American iconography was popular in advertising/branding until the 1970s!
Artist Jimmy Thompson was both prolific and versatile, working on everything including Westerns, crime, war, romance, humor, and superheroes for almost every publisher including Eastern Color, McKay, DC, Timely, Fawcett, Avon, and Street & Smith.

Advice d'Amour MR ANTHONY'S LOVE CLINIC "That's Why I Cry--"

...when he offered advice on his top-rated radio talk show!
Now, he even offers advice while wandering through the park!
Illustrated by John Prentice, this never-reprinted story from Hillman's Mr Anthony's Love Clinic #5 (1950) is something of a moralistic downer.
It's definitely not the typical upbeat happy ending we're used to seeing!

LOVE PROBLEMS AND ADVICE ILLUSTRATED "I Hated Men!"

For the rest of January, we're presenting several different tales with this title...

...because it's one of the most frequently-used headers for romance comic stories!
Illustrated (and possibly written) by Bob Powell, this (surprisingly) never-reprinted tale from McCombs' Love Problems and Advice Illustrated #1 (1949) is a classic example of male/female attitudes of the era!
Note: This year we're going to do a different theme each month.
Wait'll you see what we have planned...

GOLDEN WEST LOVE "The Love I Almost Lost"

It's not often we run a real-life love story about a celebrity...
...and, in addition, it's a romance set in the Wild West
Annie Oakley appeared in almost 300 stories in the 1950s and '60, including several strips in anthology comics, numerous guest appearances in other character's strips, and at least two solo comic books.
This story from Golden West Love #2 (1949) was penciled by Tex Blaisdell and inked by John Augustin.
The writer is unknown.

Amorous Education TEEN-AGE DIARY SECRETS "I Was Tired of BEING GOOD..."

How can you resist a tale with a titillating title like that?

Plus the art is by legendary good girl artist Matt Baker!!!
The writer of this never-reprinted tale from St John's Teen-Age Diary Stories #4 (1949) is unknown, though it's suspected to be Dana Dutch.
BTW, this particular issue was actually a magazine, featuring both fiction and non-fiction text features (with b/w illustrations) and a color comics section with three stories, including this one.
For whatever reason, the later issues of the title were standard comic-book size and format.
