Halloween HeartBreak THIS MAGAZINE IS HAUNTED! "Bridegroom, Come Back!"

" 'Til Death Do Us Part..." Takes on a Whole New Meaning...
...during the Halloween season, when the barriers between this life and the next one blur!
Steve (SpiderMan/Doctor Strange) Ditko did very few romance-themed stories during his half-century in comics.
So whenever one pops up, we take note of it, such as this tale from Charlton's This Magazine is Haunted #18 (1954).
As for who wrote it, the author is likely Charlton's go-to scripter Joe Gill, but we can't confirm it.

PHANTOM WITCH DOCTOR "Death Came Dancing"

As a Halloween treat (no trick), here's a tale about true love from beyond the grave...
...as presented in a classic 1950s horror comic!
This tale appeared in the 1952 one-shot comic anthology Phantom Witch Doctor by Avon Comics.
Both the writer and artist are unknown and the story has never been reprinted.
 Happy Halloween, everyone!

STAR-STUDDED COMICS "Ghost Woman"

She returned from the dead to save her husband from werewolves...
...in her one-and-only appearance in Cambridge House's Star-Studded Comics #1 (1945)
If this series continued, we would have learned more about Ghost Woman's abilities and limitations and her husband John would come to the realization that she was serving as his "guardian angel".
Presumably, she'd eventually lead him to his presumed-dead daughter...who was still alive!
Unfortunately, publisher Cambridge House produced only one issue each of three anthology titles featuring a number of potentially-interesting series...and then went out of business.
None of the strips and characters were picked up by other publishers.
I'm surprised something similar to Ghost Woman hasn't come along since 1945!
Considering the ongoing popularity of both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the Twilight Saga, a concept like Ghost Woman seems like a sure hit!
We hope you've enjoyed our month-long look at our idea of "weird love" comics.

HAUNTED LOVE "I'll Never Let You Go!" Conclusion

Jill loved Burt, then fell out of love with him.
On the night they broke up, Burt died in a car crash some believe was suicide caused by a broken heart.
Jill felt guilty, but eventually moved on, fell in love with Arthur, and married him.
However, Burt, even though deceased, was still obsessed with Jill.
Now the newlywed has a spectral stalker who still intends to make her his...
This never-reprinted tale of jealousy from beyond the grave, written by George Wildman and illustrated by Frank Bolle, appeared in Charlton's Haunted Love #2 (1973).

HAUNTED LOVE "I'll Never Let You Go!" Part 1

Jill was loved by two men!
...Problem is, one of them is dead, and just won't let go!
Well, at least Burt's not going on the honeymoon!
What will Jill do?
This never-reprinted tale of ghostly obsession, written by George Wildman and illustrated by Frank Bolle, appeared in Charlton's Haunted Love #2 (1973).

THRILLER "Haunted Honeymoon"

Long before Michael Jackson, Thriller was a spooky anthology TV series (and comic)...
...hosted by (and occasionally starring) horror movie legend Boris Karloff.
Illustrated by long-time artist Tom Gill (who specialized in Westerns), this tale from Gold Key's Thriller #1 (1962) is a light-hearted romp told with gentle whimsey.
Interestingly, the couple are shown in a queen-size bed at a time when movies and tv shows had their married couples in double beds!
BTW, the weird "color bar" effect between the panels was an experiment Gold Key did for several months, eventually discarding it when they received complaints the gimmick was too distracting.
Be here next Wednesday for more Halloween-season fun!
