WARTIME ROMANCES "Lovelife of an Army Nurse"

It is said that "All is fair in love and war"...

...as this nurse learns the hard way in a story from St John's Wartime Romances #1 (1951)!
Penciled by legendary "good girl" artist Mat Baker and inked by Ray Osirin, this tale of combat and cattiness was typical of the more adult approach that St John's creatives took in their various romance titles.

Alex Toth Tales POPULAR ROMANCE "Blinded by Love"

This tale about a love triangle from childhood to adulthood...
...and from lighthearted fun to tragedy would make for a heck of a Hallmark Channel movie!
This poignant Alex Toth-penciled and Mike Peppe-inked story from Standard's Popular Romances #22 (1953) is probably the single-most reprinted tale from any of the company's romance books.
Next Week:

FOXHOLE "Dear Joan--!"

Getting dumped by your Significant Other is a traumatizing experience....
...but discovering it in the middle of a pitched battle is...well...read for yourself...
Art for this tale from Charlton's FoxHole #6 (1955) by Rocco "Rocke" Mastroserio, a mainstay of the Charlton line with numerous credits in both war and romance comics, so he's an excellent choice to render this story.
The writer is unknown.
Happy Memorial Day to all!

WARTIME ROMANCES "Some Sergeants are Sweethearts"

This never-reprinted tale from 1953 may not look like a tale about romance...

...but trust us...it is!
So what did you expect?
This story's from 1953, not 2022!
Note that this is the sort of story that could only work as a prose or graphic narrative, since if it were a movie or tv presentation, the sergeant's voice would give away the twist ending!
Except for inker Bernard Sachs, the other creative credits for this tale from St John's WarTime Romances #15 are unknown.

Asian Amour ALL TRUE ROMANCE "Korean War Bride"

I've been going through the archives looking for romance comic stories featuring Asians...
...and besides some relationships in super-hero and martial arts series, all I found, so far, are tales about "war brides"!
With the current explosion of overt anti-Asian racism, we're running a RetroBog-wide presentation of stories showing how Asians and Asian-Americans been portrayed in comic books.
This never-reprinted story from Comic Media's All True Romance #11 (1953) is the first example.
Distrust and suspicion of "war brides"...whether Asian or European...was common, with many believing the women were "seductresses" taking advantage of "innocent" Americans via sex!
There are other types of tales out there...it's just going to take time to find them...

PERSONAL LOVE "A Love of My Own"

For Veteran's Day, here's a military-themed comic tale of True Love...
...that spans not only military ranks, but generations as well!
This touching (if unlikely) tale from Personal Love #24 (1953) was illustrated by an up-and-coming Frank Frazetta, who would go on to become one of the foremost sf/fantasy artists of all time, doing the definitive book covers of TarzanConan the BarbarianJohn Carter of Mars, and other classic characters as well as posters for movies and tv series including the original BattleStar Galactica.

WARTIME ROMANCES "Guilty Secrets"

Ironically, I had planned, a couple of weeks ago, to use today's cover feature...
...as the first post-Yuletide tale of 2020!
But the exacerbation of the Middle East situation by Don da Con gives the Korean War-era story a timeliness I wasn't expecting!
Penciled by comics legend Matt Baker and inked by Ray Osrin, this never-reprinted story from St John's Wartime Romances #12 (1952) was a typical about the stress and strain that wartime separation put on couples...both married and unmarried!
