LOVE STORIES "Make Me BEAUTIFUL!"

We considered putting this one under the "Amorous Education" header...

...but school isn't a major plot point in this never-reprinted tale from DC's Love Stories #148 (1973)!
Sometimes there are just no words...nor in this case, oddly, any credits!

LOVE STORIES "Dumb Doll"

Usually, "dumb doll" refers to a scatterbrained ditz, but not in this story...
If anything, this lady is one of the smartest people in any room!
Though now politically-incorrect, "dumb" was commonly-used to mean "mute" or "unable to speak", whether from a birth defect, accident, or in some cases, deliberate mutilation.
The phrase "deaf and dumb" (a condition which was far more common) indicated being unable to hear and speak!
When this never-reprinted tale was published in DC's Love Stories #151 (1973), we didn't have technology to assist in regaining speaking communication like THIS.
Writer Robert Kanigher, was a social justice warrior before they were identified as such.
His intentions were noble and he tried his best, but was a little too heavy-handed.

"This is Your Chance to Be a Part of Today's Romance Scene!"

In the early 1970s, after decades of success, romance comics were a dying genre...

...some publishers tried gimmicks, like this one from DC's Love Stories #151 (1973), to boost sales!
For anyone who's ever read or watched something and said "I could do better than that crud", this was, no doubt, a tempting prospect!
Just come up with a couple of lines of dialogue, complete this cover by penciler Werner Roth and inker Vince Colletta, and you'd be immortalized in comic history (and pocket a sawbuck), all for the cost of a postage stamp!
Wonder what the winning balloons said?
We'll never know, because the book was cancelled with the next issue, #152, and the winner would've appeared in #153!

LOVE STORIES "I Loved a Drop-Out"

It's almost the end of the school year...
...so we wanted to get this tale on the board before summer vacation!
So, the kid quits school, then blackmails his doctor father to bankroll his eduction (which Dad was going to do all along) as well as take on free patients despite Dad already having a crushing workload?
And note the kid doesn't even offer to help out in Dad's office?
This never-reprinted tale penciled by Ric Estrada and inked by Tony DeZuniga from DC's Love Stories #147 (1972) has some weird priorities!
I'd criticize the writer...but we have no idea who it is!

LOVE STORIES "Don't Use Me!"

"Sexual harassment" isn't a recent development...
...as this never-reprinted tale from DC's Love Stories #151 (1973) shows!
Penciled by Art Saff and inked by Vince Colletta, this tale was typical of romance comics of the 1970s, trying to show women both as self-sufficent and susceptible to a strong and handsome man!
Mercifully, the writer is unknown.

LOVE STORIES "That Special Man"

Romance comics were experiencing a slow death spiral in the early 1970s...
...with DC cancelling books one-by-one until only this generically-titled book remained!
This Art Saff/Vince Colletta-illustrated tale from DC's generically-titled Love Stories #152 (1973) was the penultimate romance story from DC, since it was the next-to-last tale in this final issue of the company's last surviving romance title!
The writer is unknown, but is suspected to be editor Robert Kanigher, who had penned numerous stories before...
