Prom Night: Dream or Nightmare? YOUNG ROMANCE "Campus Outcast"

It's May, the month of the annual high school/college ritual known as "The Prom"!

Will it be a fond memory...or something best forgotten?

We're starting the month off with a story from the guys who created the romance comics genre, Joe Simon & Jack Kirby in a never-reprinted tale from Prize's Young Romance #3 (1948)!
Though penciled and inked by long-time Simon & Kirby Studio artist Bill Draut, it's obvious the layouts are by Jack Kirby.
And, though no scripter can be traced, it's more than likely that, with that melancholy ending, Kirby and/or editor Joe Simon penned the story.
Note: We're beginning with a Young Romance story from the 1940s, and we'll end the month with a Young Romance story from the 1970s!
In between we'll look at proms in the 1950s, 60s, and even the future!

Alex Toth Tales SECRET HEARTS "20 Miles to Heartbreak" Part 2

Cover art by penciler Bill Draut and inker Vince Colletta.
...conveniently, writer Barbara Friedlander is going to provide a synopsis of what previously occurred...
Though, Oddly, Part 3 Will Appear in the Next Issue of Secret Hearts, instead of Young Love...

...You Won't Have to Wait a Month to Read It, Since It'll be Here on Friday!
But, You Will Cry Your Eyes Out If You Miss It!

This second chapter (out of four) from DC's Secret Hearts #141 (1970) was penciled and lettered by Alex Toth and inked by Vince Colletta.

YOUNG ROMANCE "Love Me, Love Me Not!"

What do you do when the one you love falls for someone else?
Art by Bill Draut
But, at the same time, something happens to you, as shown in the cover story from Young Romance #168 (1970)...
This titillating tale of heartbreak, horniness, and hypocrisy, was written by Jack Miller, and illustrated by Don Heck, who did a lot of romance work from the 1950s to the late 1970s, penciling or inking in conjunction with others, or doing his own complete art (like this tale)!

CINDERELLA LOVE "A Record-Breaking Affair"

Though technology changes, the human heart remains the same...
...as this tale, set long before iPods and digital music, demonstrates!
This story of workplace romance in a (then) high-tech setting was published in Cinderella Love #27 (1955).
If you don't know what "lp records" or "mimeographing" or "filing cards" are, ask your parents (or grandparents).

Trivia: There had been a previous series named Cinderella Love, which was canceled at #15.
At the same time as Cinderella Love, another comic from the same company, called Romantic Marriage, began publishing, continued to #24, then changed it's name to Cinderella Love, ending it's run with #29.
Thus, collectors of romance comics should note that Cinderella Love ran #1-15, then 25-29, with no issues 16-24!
Neither Cinderella Love or Romantic Marriages has been used as the title of a comic book since!

TRUER THAN TRUE ROMANCE "Too Dumb for Love" / SECRET HEARTS "Summer Heart"

Long after romance titles disappeared from the comics racks...
...a snarky one-shot took classic DC Comics tales and re-wrote them!
Already-successful author Jeanne Martinet decided to rewrite a number of existing romance comics tales (all written by men) with a female-oriented (and humorous) slant.
Here's the original version from DC's Secret Hearts #45 (1958)...
Art for both versions by Bill Draut.
Several years later, Marvel did a whole mini-series along the same premise.
But that's a tale for another time...
