Halloween HeartBreak FORBIDDEN WORLDS "Timeless Tribe!" Conclusion

Art by Kurt Shaffenberger
Rod Merritt travelled to South America to investigate claims of an ancient civilization of immortals!
He discovers people who can metamorph into various forms including statuary, but seem to have a particular talent for transforming into animals including lions, jaguars, and rhinos!
While the rest of the expedition is slaughtered, Rod is kept alive at the behest of Leona, one of the leaders of the hidden people, who is attracted to him...
So, what did you expect?
A happy ending?
Not what writer/editor Richard Hughes and artist Ken Landau had in mind for this story from ACG's Forbidden Worlds #145 (1967).
Note: Despite his being "repulsed" at seeing Leona's true form, Rod accepts death as long as it's at her side.
BTW, here's the original art for that page...
Was Leona originally-conceived as being even more alien-appearing?
Did the Comics Code Authority make them tone it down?
We'll never know...

Halloween HeartBreak HAUNTED LOVE "Richard"

We're Going Gothic This Week...

...with a never-reprinted tale from the longest-running gothic romance comic ever!
This story of deception and redemption from Charlton's Haunted Love #2 (1973), written by Nicola Cuti and illustrated by Joe Staton, show that true love can overcome even the greatest of obstacles...sometimes with a little spectral help!
Note: Haunted Love ran 11 issues, more than double any other gothic romance comic!

Halloween HeartBreak SUPERMAN'S GIRL FRIEND LOIS LANE "Witch of Metropolis"

This Scene Does Not  Occur in the Story Below...
...Sort Of!
Confused?
Well, you won't be after you witness the following astounding events...
Written by Otto Binder and illustrated by Kurt Schaffenberger (with some redrawing of Lois' face by either Ruben Moreira or Al Plastino), this story was popular enough to be reprinted in two of the legendary 80-Page Giants over the next decade, with its' second appearance in DC's Lois Lane #77-G39 (1967) putting it front-and-center of her weirdest tales!
Maybe we'll run "Ghost of Lois Lane!" next Halloween season!

Halloween HeartBreak MENACE "Fake!"

Remember the old adage "Don't judge a book by it's cover"?

Here's the codicil; "It goes both ways"!
Illustrated by Al Eadeh, this tale from Atlas' Menace #10 (1954) follows the classic trope of golddigger tripped up, not by her own greed, but by the fact her husband (who still loves her) is not even human!
Remember, the target audience for horror (as opposed to romance) comics was 8-14 year old boys, to whom girls were "yukky".
And for whom Lois Lane , the nosy reporter who was always trying to either expose Superman's secret identity or trick the Man of Steel into marrying her, was the typical woman!

Halloween HeartBreak SORCERY "Death is My Love's Name"

Greetings GhoulFriends and BoyFiends!

It's time to get your hearts racing!
But will it be with lust...or terror?
Written by Marv Channing, and illustrated by Frank (Red Sonja) Thorne, this tale of obsessive love appeared in the final issue of Archie/Red Circle's Sorcery (#10 in 1974).

Halloween HeartBreak WORLD OF FANTASY "Strange Wife of Henry Johnson!"

Welcome to our final Countdown to Halloween 2024 tale...

...as we look at the never-reprinted tale behind this incredibly-misleading (but atmospheric), never-reprinted Bill Everett cover!
That means no one has seen this story from Atlas' World of Fantasy #4 (1956)...except you...for almost seven decades!
So she's not a witch...but an alien!
I have the feeling the cover was done before the Comics Code Authority began its' stranglehold on what was left of the comic book industry, but frugal editor Stan Lee didn't want it to go to waste, so he had an unknown writer along with artist John Forte take the basic plot and drop the supernatural element, replacing it with sci-fi!
It's still a nice tale of "love conquers all", eh?
