Love is a Prison A MOON, A GIRL...ROMANCE "Prison Widow"

Now witness a tale where things, hopefully, might end differently!
Written and illustrated by Al Feldstein, this rarely-reprinted story from EC's A Moon, a Girl...Romance #12 (1950) ends with potential happiness for Florence....but was the original version meant to show her losing both men?
BTW, even though it was the cover-featured story for this issue, the cover was just so dull and boring...
...not to mention inaccurate (since Flo didn't know her incarcerated hubby was heading home after being paroled), that we went with the far more exciting splash page!

Amorous Education & Wedding Bliss CONFESSIONS ILLUSTRATED "High School Bride"

In a total contrast to last week's frivolous flight of fancy...
...here's a totally-serious tale...but with an upbeat ending!
I had said that the only genre the EC Comics crew couldn't handle well was romance.
OK, I was wrong.
This story, and the entire EC Comics Confessions Illustrated series, prove me incorrect.
In their final attempt, after Saddle Romances; A Moon, a Girl, Romance; and Modern Love, they finally got it right!
This particular tale, written by Daniel (Flowers for Algernon) Keyes and illustrated by Jack Kamen, was never published during the series' original run.
It was intended for #3...but the series ended with #2.
It was finally published in a now OOP boxed hardcover edition in 2006 presenting all the EC "Picto-Fiction" titles along with their previously-unpublished final issues!
But it was just reprinted last month as a standalone edition, as you see below.

A MOON, A GIRL...ROMANCE "Summer Love"

Before EC Comics became (in)famous for doing horror and sci-fi comics...
...they covered every genre in comics, including romance!
They just didn't do all of them as well as horror and sci-fi...
Illustrated by "Ghastly" Graham Ingels, this tacky tale from EC's A Moon, A Girl...Romance #11 (1949) is, perhaps, the perfect example of why EC is not known for its' romance comics.
To be fair, that's not quite accurate...EC's post-horror comics title Confessions Illustrated was a first-rate romance b/w graphic magazine (not comic), targeted at the late-teen/young adult audience!
But it didn't sell, and, like the rest of the Picto-Fiction line is incredibly hard to find today!

A MOON, A GIRL...ROMANCE " I Was Jilted and Had No Desire to Live!"

Sometimes, you just want a three-hankie tear-jerker...
...to cleanse your soul...and here it is!
I know, I know.
This being EC Comics, you half-expected her to take the poison, become zombified, and eat Gregg when he came to the door.
And, the story from EC's A Moon, a Girl...Romance #9 (1949) is so cliched that it might have inspired writer/illustrator Al Feldstein to think about doing exactly that when, a year later, EC began doing its' now-classic horror comics titles!

Before EC Comics became (in)famous for doing horror comics...
...they covered every genre in comics, including romance!

Illustrated by "Ghastly" Graham Ingels, this tawdry tale from EC's A Moon, A Girl...Romance #9 (1949) is, perhaps, the perfect example of why EC is not known for its' romance comics.

SADDLE ROMANCES "Saddles in the Sky!"

Let's return to a romance sub-genre we haven't visited in a while...
...with the added twist that this story from EC's Saddle Romances #9 (1949) takes place in contemporary times!
With cover and interior art by then-still developing illustrator "Ghastly" Graham Ingels, this tale manages to take several well-worn cliches and make them entertaining!
