YOUNG LOVE "Love is a Dirty Word" Conclusion

When Last We Left Our Heroine(s)...
Sixteen-year old Amy is thrilled her older sister Carol has a devoted boyfriend, Jackie.
However, Amy feels no one will ever love her.
To complicate matters, their mother tries to keep any males at arm's length from her daughters!
(Her attitude is somewhat understandable, since the girls' father abandoned the family without a word.
But still...)
Then Amy meets Larry and falls for him like the proverbial ton of bricks!
All is right with the world, until...
Jackie breaks up with Carol, who then is crippled in a traffic accident as she rushes to her former lover!
Then, their mother goes ballistic against all men...
The artists on this story were Alex Toth (pencils) and Dick Giordano (inks).
Toth was the primary character designer for the Hanna-Barbera animation studio from the 1960s thru the 1980s, responsible for the "look" of their "realistic" shows from Space Ghost to Fantastic Four to Super Friends to Josie and the Pussycats! (as opposed to the more "cartoony" Flintstones)
He had started his career in comic books in the 1940s, and liked to return to the field to do a couple of stories every year, as his animation schedule permitted.
As you can see, he hadn't lost his touch!

TIPPY TEEN "Kiss and Tell"

Besides romance comics, most of us also read "teen humor" comics...
...like Tippy Teen, which featured this tale that starts off with our heroine reading a romance comic...
If the plotting and art style on this tale from 1967's Tippy Teen #17 reads like an Archie Comics story, that's because many of their writers and artists (who were freelancers) including Sam Schwartz, Harry Shorten, and Dan DeCarlo, also worked on Tippy strips for the short-lived Tower Comics in the 1960s!

OUR LOVE STORY "But He's the Boy I Love!"

We weren't planning on running another tale from Our Love Story for a couple of months, but the penciler of this story, Gene Colan, passed away on June 23rd, and we wanted to present a sample of his artwork.
Gene worked for almost every company at one point or another, and in every genre from horror to war to superhero to romance, all with a very distinctive style, much more naturalistic than most "comic book" artists.
Enjoy this tale from Our Love Story #5, 1970...

HEART & SOUL "Take Me Back"

Can a European aristocrat be a happy housewife in Middle America?
Judge for yourself in this scintillating saga from 1954's Heart & Soul #2!
Penciled by Mike Sekowsky, best known for writing/drawing radical revamps in the 1970s of both Wonder Woman...
...and Supergirl (in Adventure Comics).
Inked by Mike Esposito, who did a lot of romance work along with superhero and sci-fi art.
