LOVELORN "My Heart Went Astray!"

It's amazing how few Christmas-themed American romance comic stories there are...

...so we're going with this tale of greed and vanity set during a winter vacation!
(Hey, I'm working on finding more Yuletide romances!)

So, everything works out hunky-dory...except for poor Fallon!

Poor guy just can't catch a break...

This never-reprinted tale of love (of money) appeared in ACG's LoveLorn #4 (1950) and is typical of the era with its' "woman who must be shown the error of her ways before she can find true love" plotline.

Though both the writer and artist are unknown, it's fair to guess that Editor Richard E Hughes plotted and/or scripted the tale.

COOKIE "Do Your Christmas Shopping Early"

How do you make some extra cash for Christmas?

If you're a teenager named "Cookie", it's usually the hard way...

I've found almost NO Christmas-specific romance comic stories!
Heck, I had to go through a stack of British comics to find last-year's tale (click HERE)

So I went with this teen humor strip from Cookie #10 (1947), written and illustrated by Dan Gordon, who was a writer-animator-director for the Fleischer Studios (Superman, Popeye), then went into comics, finally returning to animation at Hanna-Barbera where he co-created (among others) The Flintstones!
Note: Archie Comics has a huge number of Christmas-themed stories featuring Archie and Betty & Veronica!
I'm looking to find a couple of the earliest ones that would still be Public Domain to use here!

Archie and Friends All-Stars Christmas Stocking

Amorous Education SORORITY SECRETS "Secret!"

Halloween's over, so it's time to return to class...

...where students are diligently-applying themselves to the subject at hand!

Moral: if you don't like someone, blackmail them with a lie (but only if there's nothing truthful that's really juicy).

Ironically, that's exactly the sort of thing we see on prime-time soaps today, almost 70 years later!

This never-reprinted tale from Toby's Sorority Secrets #1 (1954) shows the styles of several noted Golden Age artists.

Among the talents listed as working on the book (but not as to which stories they did) are; Bernard Baily, Ben Brown, David Gantz, and John Rosenberger.

This particular story shows both Baily and Rosenberger's work in certain panels, so we'll go with them as the illustrators.

The writer, though, is unknown.

Halloween HeartBreak / Tell a Tale of Terror Thrice WORLD OF FANTASY "If...!"

Ever think men and women are from totally-different worlds?

This reworking of yesterday's story (Seen HERE) proves you right!

Writer Carl Wessler had already used the basic plot for this story twice before:

1. "If!" in Atlas' Suspense #27 (1953), with the girl and her family being werewolves and vampires (talk about a blended family) as you saw yesterday!
2. "Out Cold" in EC's Haunt of Fear #25 (1954), with the girl and family shown to be ghouls!

But, by the time this never-reprinted story in Atlas' World of Fantasy #2 (1956) was published, the Comics Code had been implemented, banning "creatures of the night", except in humor titles.

So Wessler went with aliens.

Sci-fi was experiencing a resurgence, so it was the logical way to go.

The illustrator was Jay Scott Pike who ended up specializing in romance comics.

Halloween HeartBreak / Tell a Tale of Terror Thrice SUSPENSE "If!"

Here's a real Halloween treat...no trick...a little tale about a guy and a gal from different worlds...

...and we mean that literally!

Written by Carl Wessler, illustrated by Fred Kida, this never-reprinted tale from Atlas' Suspense #27 (1953) shows off panache and style close to the legendary EC Comics horror titles of the era.

In fact, Wessler reused the plot (with the variation of the girl and her family being ghouls, not vampires) the next year in EC's Haunt of Fear #25 as "Out Cold!".
(Since that's been reprinted numerous times, and is still under copyright, we aren't going to run it here.)

Even after the Comics Code forbade werewolves, vampires and ghouls, Wessler managed to get another version of the story into print, this time making the girl and her family aliens in Atlas' World of Fantasy #2 (1956)!

We promised you "Tell a Tale of Terror Thrice", right?

Well, Carl reused the concept one last time, returning to horror in a b/w magazine, which wasn't restrained by the Comics Code Authority!

So look for the final version of this terrifying tale in baleful black-and-white from Pastime Publishing's Weird Mysteries #1 (1959) on Friday!

Halloween HeartBreak TALES CALCULATED TO DRIVE YOU BATS "Rocky the Stone Man"

Remember those Charles Atlas ads in comic books?

Let's see what happens when someone literally resculpts himself to win a girl!

While the artist of this tale from Archie's Tales Calculated to Drive You Bats #6 (1962) is unknown, the writer is George Gladir.

Archie Comics kept at least one MAD-style humor anthology going from the late 1950s (after MAD switched from four-color comic to black-and-white magazine) through the 1960s.

Though Tales Calculated to Drive You Bats! expired after only seven issues, it's sister title, Archie's Mad House (which initially-featured various Archie characters as hosts of the stories), survived to 1981!
