What Do LOVE PROBLEMS & ADVICE ILLUSTRATED and PRIVATE LIVES AND LOVES OF GIRLS IN WHITE Have in Common?

We'll tell you in a second...
...it's been an exhausting week leading up to the election and we're just too pooped to do a full story post!
But we didn't want to disappoint our faithful audience!

So, this week, we offer a kool Lee Elias-illustrated cover you wouldn't usually see on this blog...for a very unusual reason!
Wonder why?
Because it had nothing to do with any story in McCombs' Love Problems and Advice Illustrated #1 (1949).
Note: Harvey Comics purchased McCombs' inventory when it went out of business in 1950, and continued the Love Problems comic for 42 more issues until 1957.
And here's the weirdest thing...
...the cover art was re-used for Private Lives and Loves of Girls in White, which appeared as part of Harvey's Comic Hits anthology (#58 in 1952), an issue about romances involving doctors and nurses!
BTW, it still didn't have anything to do with any of the stories in the book!

Countdown to Halloween 2020 HAUNTED LOVE "Eternal Love"

It's almost Halloween, and, sadly, it's time for our final Haunted Love presentation!

But, there are no monsters, ghouls, or mysticism here...
Yes, they died.
But they died happy...with each other...and left art that expressed that love!
Can anybody think of a better ending?
I can't!
Written by Joe Gill and illustrated by Enrique Nieto, this never-reprinted story from Charlton's Haunted Love #10 (1975) doesn't really fit the book's concept, unless you consider their souls together until the end of time, as "ghosts"!
I'm willing to go with that...
Next Week:
We Don't Yet Know What We'll Present, But We Guarantee...
You'll Cry Your Eyes Out If You Miss It!
This Halloween, we featured the best of the rarely-reprinted 1970s Charlton gothic romance book Haunted Love!

Countdown to Halloween 2020 HAUNTED LOVE "Until We Meet Again"

Though he did few romance stories in his over half a century in comics...

...Steve (Doctor Strange) Ditko had quite a bit of experience with mystical mood!
Is this man a corpse possessed by the spirit/soul of Gerald, or some sort of regeneration of Gerald's deceased form?
I don't think Sheila cares, and this never-reprinted Joe Gill-scripted, Steve Ditko-illustrated tale from Charlton's Haunted Love #5 (1973) never makes it clear...
BTW, the inking on this story looks more like Joe Staton than Ditko himself!
Is it?
We may never know...

Countdown to Halloween 2020 HAUNTED LOVE "Curse of the Byrnyres"

A romance story doesn't get more Gothic than this...
...thunderstorms, creepy old house, heroine in peril, spooky people, cryptic warnings, an ancient curse, and, oh yes, monsters!
Writer Nicola Cuti and illustrator Joe Staton certainly know their Gothic romance tropes...and use them to superb effect in this tale from Charlton's Haunted Love #5 (1973)!
You can see Staton's current work daily (and Sunday) on the Dick Tracy newspaper comic strip!

Contdown to Halloween 2020 HAUNTED LOVE "Eye Of Beauty"

For centuries, beautiful women have been muses for artists who truly loved them...

...as this never-reprinted story from Charlton's Haunted Love #7 (1975) demonstrates!

It's odd to see panel pages in that art style in full-color, isn't it?

We're used to seeing manga and manhwa in b/w or two-color!
Sanho Kim (or Kim San-ho) was already an acclaimed writer/artist in South Korea before coming to the US in 1966.
Illustrating a wide variety of genres including romance, horror, war, and martial arts, Sanho worked primarily for Charlton (who published this tale in Haunted Love #9 in 1975), with occasional work for Warren (where he also wrote the stories he illustrated), Marvel, and Skywald, totaling over several hundred stories.
Sanho returned to South Korea in 1996 and continues to write and illustrate to this day.
He received the Order of Cultural Merit (much like the Kennedy Center Honors in America) in 2008.
