YOUNG ROMANCE "Different!" Part 1

With ethnic and religious prejudice on the rise again...
...perhaps we should look back on how pop culture tried to deal with it back in the 1940s...
Joe Simon and Jack Kirby weren't the sorts to let social injustices stand without speaking out.
The prejudices presented here, though mild, were (and are) quite real, and Simon & Kirby should be credited with trying to present the truth about them to their impressionable audience in Prize's Young Romance #30 (1951).

REACH FOR HAPPINESS Episode 22 Part 2

..she convinces movie producer B.W. to keep director Barry Gordon (who directed Karen's late husband) on the payroll.
Impressed by the fact she stood up to him, B.W. takes Karen on a tour of his studio...
Karen's being handed a one-in-a-million chance and all she can think about is...Greg?
Now that is obsessive...
This chapter of "Reach for Happiness" from Secret Hearts #131 (1968) was written by Jack Miller, but the art credits are becoming somewhat nebulous, as a variety of hands seem to be doing various things on different pages, so we're not going to offer an assessment as to who did what, except the splash/cover art is by Dick Giordano!
BTW, there won't be any "Reach for Happiness" in October since we'll be running romance tales with horror or sci-fi/fantasy themes through the entire month to celebrate Halloween!
Next Week...
We don't know yet what we'll present!
But, we can guarantee that...
You'll Cry Your Eyes Out if You Miss It!
(Yeah, we say that a lot...but it's true!)

ADVENTURES IN ROMANCE "Head Over Heels in Love"

With Labor Day coming up, it's time to ease into Autumn...
...as we did into summer, with another story from the short-lived (and never reprinted) St John's Adventures in Romance #1 (1949)!
Written by the prolific Dana Dutch, about whom very little is known, except his extensive list of  comic scripts.
Interestingly, out of 206 identified scripts, over 200 were romance stories, with a smattering of superhero and high adventure!
Illustrated by the versatile Frank Bolle, who's still active in the field today!
Here's his website!
Next week:
The Return of Reach for Happiness...
(Yes, we screwed up the scheduling, but this time we mean it!)
You'll Cry Your Eyes Out if You Miss It!
(Things are really getting juicy...)

MY LOVE "Must I Live Without Love?"

As Summer turns to Fall in the real world...
...we look at a cover by John Buscema and Frank Giacoia that takes a scene occuring (in the story) during the chilly Autumn and turns it into a hot Summer pic...
When this story by writer Stan Lee, penciler John Buscema, and inker Sal Buscema initially-appeared in Marvel's My Love V2N1 (1969), it wasn't the cover-featured tale.
But, when it was reprinted in Marvel's My Love Special #1 (1971), a new cover, based on the last panel of Page 6, was commissioned.
Guess they felt a bare-chested guy and bikini-clad girl would sell better than the sweater-clad couple in the story...
Next week:
The Return of Reach for Happiness...
You'll Cry Your Eyes Out if You Miss It!
