TIPPY TEEN "What's Happening, Baby?"

When middle-aged men write stories about hipsters...

...the results are going to be...interesting, offering a look at how the middle class viewed beatniks in the 1960s!

If the plotting and art style on this tale from 1968's Tippy Teen #19 reads like an Archie Comics story, that's because many of their writers and artists (who were freelancers) including Sam Schwartz, Harry Shorten, and Dan DeCarlo, also worked on Tippy strips for the short-lived Tower Comics in the 1960s!

If anyone can tell me who of that crew did this tale, I'll post the info and credit the poster!

Though there were a number of Easter-themed comic stories (and even entire comic books) in the 1940s and 1950s, this is the only Easter-themed comic I could find from the Silver Age!

GO-GO "Violin Violation"

One of the most successful Archie-style imitators was Tippy Teen...

...who sold well enough to spin-off a book featuring some of her supporting cast, led by Tippy's best friend, Go-Go and her on-and-off boyfriend Animal.

Written and illustrated by Sam Schwartz and Harry Lucey, this never-reprinted tale from Tower's Tippy's Friends Go-Go and Animal #1 (1966) has the look and feel of an Archie comic of the era.

That's not surprising since both Schwartz and Lucey were regular contributors to various Archie titles!

JETTA OF THE 21st CENTURY "Man Trouble"

...in this case, her very first apperance from Jetta of the 21st Century #5 (1952), which was actually the first issue.

(Issues 1-4 were a romance comic called Today's Romance!)

Written and penciled by the legendary Dan DeCarlo, but may not have been inked by him.

JETTA OF THE 21st CENTURY "My Cosmic Hero"

A romantic summer evening at the drive-in...

...except it's in the 21st Century...as seen from the viewpoint of 1952!
(I'm still waiting for my flying car!)

If the art style looks familiar, it's the work of Dan DeCarlo, who helped establish the iconic "look" of Archie Comics!
Dan actually started at Atlas Comics (the 1940s-50s predecessor to Marvel Comics) doing a variety of humor strips before beginning a long-term run on various Archie titles in 1951.
Even then, he continued to work for a number of other publishers, including Standard Comics, who asked him to create, write, and illustrate a teen-humor series.
(Every publisher had at least one of them!)
Exactly whose idea it was to set it in the "far future" of the 21st Century is unknown, but the resultant strip, though extremely derivative of Archie, was unique in the teen-humor genre for it's Jetsons-style setting and "futuristic" slang.

BTW, we're presenting more teen-humor because our post on Tippy Teen was one of the most popular items we've ever run!
(And we have lots of teen-humor material on hand!  Archie Comics isn't the only stuff out there!)
