WARTIME ROMANCES "Make-Believe Marriage"

The 1950s.
When employers could legally-discriminate against you if you weren't married!
Here's a litany of lies and love (and a couple of wildly-improbable coincidences) illustrated by the legendary Matt Baker in St John's WarTime Romances #1, 1951.
Scripted by either Dana Dutch or editor Ruth Roche, this densely-plotted tale rivals the Simon-Kirby Young Romance and Young Love for appeal to both teen and young adult readers!
(In fact, the two demographics were pretty-evenly represented in 1940s-50s romance comics' readership!)

DARING LOVE "Paper Romance"

This week we're presenting a tale from Daring Love (1953), a one-shot comic featuring a one-time combination of two of the most famous artists in comic book history!
The artists are:
1) Matt Baker, whom we've shown here several times, doing layouts.
2) And, in his very first published story, Steve Ditko, who would later co-create Spider-Man and Dr. Strange, on finished pencils and inks.

Next week:
We haven't decided yet what it'll be, but we can guarantee that...

COWGIRL ROMANCES "Stars Fell on Arizona" / MOVIE COMICS "Mitzi in Hollywood Meets Sonny Sagebrush"

but this story from Fiction House's CowGirl Romances #10 (1952) doesn't do that!

OK, pretty straightforward tale of a starry-eyed girl living near a movie location, getting to appear in the movie, meeting her screen idol, and not finding true love, right?
But, that's not how it started out!
This is actually a re-use of lovely Matt Baker art for an earlier ongoing series, Mitzi in Hollywood, about a struggling actress looking for her big break in Hollywood!
This particular episode from Fiction House's Movie Comics #4 (1947) was about working on a Western, and the original script was quite different...
Sadly, this was the final issue of Movie Comics, so no more Mitzi adventures ever appeared...except as heavily-modified reprints!
