Love in the Time of Covid-19 SUPERMAN'S GIRL FRIEND LOIS LANE "Snoopiest Girl in History!"

As the second wave of the CoronaVirus pandemic rampages across America (and the globe)...

...we return to disease-related romance stories, with this one featuring fiction's most famous girlfriend!
Lois Lane is responsible for CoronaVirus???
That's the only conclusion you can reach from this never-reprinted tale from DC's Superman's Girl Friend Lois Lane #56 (1965)!
What did writer Edmond Hamilton and illustrator Kurt Schaffenberger know 55 years ago that we are only now discovering???
Note: While comics have long been pre-teen/teen male-oriented, romance comics (and Lois Lane fits into that category) have been pre-teen/teen/young adult female-oriented!
So why make the heroine in a female-oriented book such a manipulative bitch?
I don't know, but it was successful enough to keep the book running from 1958 to 1974, with the strip continuing for another few years in Superman Family, which combined Lois, Jimmy Olsen, Supergirl, and a new series Mr & Mrs Superman, which featured the married 1940s Clark and Lois of Earth-Two!
Next Week:
Another tale combining Disease and Desire!

Love in the Time of Covid-19 MY TRUE LOVE THRILLING CONFESSION STORIES "Week-End Romance"

Nothing like a good old-fashioned romantic triangle...

...this time involving a trio of medical personnel!
This never-reprinted tale from Fox's My True Love Thrilling Confession Stories #66 (1949) shows not only true love, but ethics and morals (something currently lacking in many, both in government and civilians), triumphing in the end!

Love in the Time of Covid-19 ROMANTIC MARRIAGE "There's Room for Three"

Not every triangle between two women and a man involves romance...

...as this never-reprinted tale from Ziff-Davis' Romantic Marriage #9 (1952) proves...

What did you think was going to develop here?

It's the 1950s, you dirty-minded readers!

Though the scripter is unknown, the art is by penciler Alice Kirkpatrick and inker Bernard Sachs.

Alice Kirkpatrick was one of the unsung heroines of Golden Age comics.

She started illustrating pulp magazines in 1937, but when the field slowly died after World War II, she switched to comic books, co-creating Sally O'Neill : Policewoman for Quality's National Comics and taking over Betty Bates: Lady at Law (a hands-on, kick-ass District Attorney) in Quality's Hit Comics!

But, within a year, her bread-and-butter became romance comics, with over 150 stories to her credit!

She left the business after the "Seduction of the Innocent" purge in the mid-1950s almost wiped out comics, and her post-comics life is a mystery.

BTW, you may notice a slightly-different look to the blog, especially in the way the text is breaking. This is due to Blogger changing their interface, and eliminating single-space breaks between sentences.

We're working to adjust the html to compensate.

Love in the Time of Covid-19 UNTAMED LOVE "No Cure for Disillusion"

Usually these hospital-based tales involve a male doctor and female nurse...
...but this one features a female sawbones involved with a male medico!
The creators of this tale of disease and desire from Quality's Untamed Love #5 (1950) are unknown.
BTW, you may notice that the head at the top of the pages says "Love Confessions".
Thats because these pages are from that reprint, which had much better coloring!

Love in the Time of Covid-19 FIRST ROMANCE "Take Me"

Not every romance comics story has a happy ending!
Some are melancholy!
Some are bittersweet!
You decide which one is applicable here...
Personally, I lean towards "bittersweet", because Larry will help Mary though the crisis, and, with any luck, she'll fall for him...
This story of desire deferred and disease from Harvey's First Romance #25 (1953) was illustrated by multi-genre mainstay Bob Powell. but the author is unknown...

Love in the Time of Covid-19 LOVE DIARY "I was Branded a Flirt, a Nurse Confesses..."

For our final (for now) disease-themed story...
...we present an intense, never-reprinted one from Orbit's Love Diary #1 (1949) which takes a twist you probably don't expect!!
That "life together" continued for five more issues of Love Diary, along with a two-story spinoff featuring supporting character Sally Weeks!
Vicky didn't end up with the wholesome "boy next door" doctor as you might expect, but the glamourous, slightly-arrogant studmuffin!
But, that doesn't mean the course of true love is without some rough patches, as you'll see when we continue this series in our "brother" RetroBlog Medical Comics and Stories!
