ADVENTURES IN ROMANCE "September Squall"

With autumn right around the corner...

...here's a tale for the final weekend of warm weather that really fits the concept of a "beach read'!

You'll note a couple of two-page spreads at the beginning of the story.
This particular comic series, St John's Adventures in Romance #1 (1949), experimented with doing double-page spreads to establish a distinctive "look".
Sadly, it only lasted two issues.  ;-(
Artist Warren King spent several years in comic books doing everything from superheroes to horror to romance, before moving into newspaper cartooning, becoming the in-house editorial artist at the NY Daily News and winning the National Cartoonists Society Best Editorial Cartoonist Award in 1968.

SECRET HEARTS "Mad Mad Modes for Moderns: '60s Swimsuits"

Though the summer is winding down...

...there's never a bad time to (if you're a girl) see the then-current swimsuit fashions or (if you're a guy) have a look at girls in swimwear, as shown in this never-reprinted feature from DC's Secret Hearts #122 (1967)!

"Mad Modes" was a feature that ran in all the DC romance titles from 1966 to 1970 whenever a one or two-page filler was needed.

Written by Barbara Friedlander, the feature was intitially-illustrated (as in this case) by Tony Abruzzo, one of the mainstays of the romance line, with Jay Scott Pike taking over later in the strip's run.

SECRET WARS: SECRET LOVE

For those who say new romance comics aren't marketable, I offer...

...this current one-shot title from Marvel Comics, with a variant cover by the usually-amazing David Nakayama (who apparently doesn't know how easy it is to do a decent "retro-Lichtenstein" ben-day dot pattern in PhotoShop).

Note: the stories inside are much better than the cover.

The book has already sold out and is scheduled for a second printing, hopefully with a corrected cover!
