COOKIE "Turkey Meets Jerky"

I couldn't find a single romance comic with a Thanksgiving theme...
...but, thankfully (pun intended), teen humor comics have a number of them!
Note, there is a romantic sub-plot involving Cookie's girlfriend AngelPuss!
Curiously, this tale, written and illustrated by Dan Gordon, is from the same issue our previous Cookie holiday tale appeared in, ACG's Cookie #10 (1947)!
Dan Gordon was a writer-animator-director for the Fleischer Studios (Superman, Popeye), then went into comics, finally returning to animation at Hanna-Barbera where he co-created (among others) The Flintstones!

Advice d'Amour MARY WORTH "Doctor Ward's Secret" The LOST Sunday Strips

September was Mary Worth  Month as We Presented...

...a comic reprinting a 1944 plotline from the newspaper strip which combined both daily and Sunday strips, but left out quite a bit of material due to redundancy!
We've since found the Sundays from that period, though, sadly, they're in b/w!
(Ironically, the dailies, which are published in b/w, were colored for the comic book!)
We now present them, along with links to the posts which feature the comic book pages they were adapted into!

We hope you've enjoyed our little "archeological dig" into the history of a still-popular soap opera strip!

Advice d'Amour MARY WORTH featuring TOM KANE

Comics' Best-Known Little Old Lady/Busybody Returns...

...with a never-reprinted compilation from her still-ongoing newspaper comic strip!

Appearing in the Standard Comics one-shot Major Hoople Comics (1943), this 1942 tale by "Dale Allen" (Co-creators writer Allen Saunders and artist Dale Connor) introduced Connie Barclay, who ends up marrying ongoing character Tom Kane, and the two then fade from the series.
Ironically, Dale Connor left the strip shortly after this.
Ken Ernst, the longest-running illustrator on the strip began his run, which would continue until he passed away in 1985.
As we mentioned, the series continues to this day, one of the few to survive from the 1930s to the present without a break!
Check out the current Mary Worth strip HERE! and a cool article about the series (with timeline) HERE!

Prom Night: Dream or Nightmare? YOUNG ROMANCE "Campus Outcast"

It's May, the month of the annual high school/college ritual known as "The Prom"!

Will it be a fond memory...or something best forgotten?

We're starting the month off with a story from the guys who created the romance comics genre, Joe Simon & Jack Kirby in a never-reprinted tale from Prize's Young Romance #3 (1948)!
Though penciled and inked by long-time Simon & Kirby Studio artist Bill Draut, it's obvious the layouts are by Jack Kirby.
And, though no scripter can be traced, it's more than likely that, with that melancholy ending, Kirby and/or editor Joe Simon penned the story.
Note: We're beginning with a Young Romance story from the 1940s, and we'll end the month with a Young Romance story from the 1970s!
In between we'll look at proms in the 1950s, 60s, and even the future!

Romance on the Range REAL WEST ROMANCES "To Fight for Her Man!"

In the Old West, Men Were Real Men, Women Were Real Women...

and everybody had real guns...and knew how to use them!

Edited by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby (the team who invented the romance comics genre), Real West Romances was one of two cross-genre titles Prize Comics published between 1949-1950, with the other being Western Love, also edited by Simon & Kirby!
This particular never-reprinted tale from V1N2 (1949) was illustrated by Leonard Starr, and likely written by Simon and/or Kirby.
It's also probable Kirby did rough layouts for the story.

Next week:
We haven't decided yet which Western Romance Story it'll be, but we can guarantee that...
You'll Cry Your Eyes Out if You Miss It!
