LOVELORN "My Heart Went Astray!"

It's amazing how few Christmas-themed American romance comic stories there are...

...so we're going with this tale of greed and vanity set during a winter vacation!
(Hey, I'm working on finding more Yuletide romances!)

So, everything works out hunky-dory...except for poor Fallon!

Poor guy just can't catch a break...

This never-reprinted tale of love (of money) appeared in ACG's LoveLorn #4 (1950) and is typical of the era with its' "woman who must be shown the error of her ways before she can find true love" plotline.

Though both the writer and artist are unknown, it's fair to guess that Editor Richard E Hughes plotted and/or scripted the tale.

ROMANTIC ADVENTURES "Bewitching Buccaneer"

Swashbucking rogues have always been objects of romantic desire...

...as this tale featuring a sea-going scalliwag in the Errol Flynn/Tyrone Power mold proves!

Romances set in the Old West were a popular sub-genre of both comics and novels in the early 1950s.

In fact there were a number of titles like Range Romances, Golden West, and  CowGirl Romances!

This story from ACG's Romantic Adventures #8 (1950) may have been a test to see if comic readers were interested in historical romance tales set in other time periods.

Since pirates were popular in novels, it was thought they'd sell equally-well in comics.

However, reader response must have been lackluster, since such "historical romances" remained few and far between on the four-color pages.
BTW, Anne Bonny was a real female pirate, and will be the subject of this week's post on our "sister" blog Heroines this Friday, when we re-present the first story in her short-lived comic series!

LOVELORN "World's Most Dangerous Game!"

BTW, though the logo says "Confessions of the Lovelorn", the book's title was officially just "Lovelorn"...until the next issue and for the remainder of the book's run!

BTW, 1956, when ACG's Lovelorn #75, was published, was an Olympic year!

Regrettably, both the writer and artist are unknown, but I'd conjecture that editor Richard Hughes is the scripter and Curt Swan was the penciler (and possibly inker).

3-D: LOVELORN "Moment to Remember"

You won't need the red/blue 3-D glasses to read this 3-D comic story...

...because it's not red/blue 3-D, but an idea to simulate 3-D called...

It's a clever idea, but I can see how it would become irritating on an ongoing basis.
Art by Harry Lazarus, one of a trio of siblings (including Sid and Leon) who all ended up writing and/or illustrating comic books during the 1940s-1960s.
(They are not related to Mell Lazarus, writer/artist of the comic strips Miss Peach and Momma, who also worked in comic books in the 1950s.
Small world, ain't it?)
