Lost Love FALLING IN LOVE "I Found My Love at the WoodStock Festival!"

...we had no idea there was a second, also never-reprinted tale...from DC, of all places!
(And this story came out months before the Marvel one!)
Penciled by Werner Roth, inked by Murphy Anderson, and scripted by...well, we don't know who wrote this rather saccharine story...it's nowhere near as "gritty" or realistic (if you can call any comic book tale "realistic") as the My Love piece we ran last week.
To offer a comparison...
The
My Love creatives, Gary Friedrich and Gray Morrow were 28 and 38, respectively.
The Falling in Love creatives, Werner Roth and Murphy Anderson, were 50 and 46 at the time.
So we're looking at a differing generational point of view of those events between the two tales...and it really shows!

Alex Toth Tales YOUNG ROMANCE "Searing Conclusion to Next Door to Love"

We Have Already Seen...

Coverart by Werner Roth (pencils), Vince Colletta (inks)
...actually, I'm going to let the writer do the synopsis!

BTW, if the story from DC's Young Romance #164 (1970) looks somewhat familiar to you, that's because we ran the re-edited, re-worked, re-titled reprint in DC's Young Love #114 (1975)
Besides the usual "updating" modifications to hairstyles and fashions, two pages were cut from the story!

LOVE STORIES "Dumb Doll"

Usually, "dumb doll" refers to a scatterbrained ditz, but not in this story...
If anything, this lady is one of the smartest people in any room!
Though now politically-incorrect, "dumb" was commonly-used to mean "mute" or "unable to speak", whether from a birth defect, accident, or in some cases, deliberate mutilation.
The phrase "deaf and dumb" (a condition which was far more common) indicated being unable to hear and speak!
When this never-reprinted tale was published in DC's Love Stories #151 (1973), we didn't have technology to assist in regaining speaking communication like THIS.
Writer Robert Kanigher, was a social justice warrior before they were identified as such.
His intentions were noble and he tried his best, but was a little too heavy-handed.

"This is Your Chance to Be a Part of Today's Romance Scene!"

In the early 1970s, after decades of success, romance comics were a dying genre...

...some publishers tried gimmicks, like this one from DC's Love Stories #151 (1973), to boost sales!
For anyone who's ever read or watched something and said "I could do better than that crud", this was, no doubt, a tempting prospect!
Just come up with a couple of lines of dialogue, complete this cover by penciler Werner Roth and inker Vince Colletta, and you'd be immortalized in comic history (and pocket a sawbuck), all for the cost of a postage stamp!
Wonder what the winning balloons said?
We'll never know, because the book was cancelled with the next issue, #152, and the winner would've appeared in #153!

TENDER LOVE STORIES "My Kind of Music!"

Motorcycle, guitar, long hair, fringed jacket...
...yep, this Don Heck/Joe Sinnott cover superbly-portrays a 1970's version of a "bad boy"!
Long-time pros Jack Katz, Werner Roth, and John Tartaglone illustrated this never-reprinted tale from Skywald's Tender Love Stories #1 (1971).

ACTUAL ROMANCES "I Refused to Share My Husband's Love!"

Incest (potential or otherwise) is a near-taboo subject on soap operas today...
...but the then-brand new genre of romance comics took several cracks at it back in the 1940s.
Note: this never-reprinted tale from Timely Comics' Actual Romances #1 (1949) makes the brother and sister step-siblings, just to be safe.
Though the Grand Comics Database lists Mike Sekowsky as the artist, it looks a lot like a combination of Werner Roth and Bill Everett, both of whom were working for Timely.
The writer is unknown.
