Halloween HeartBreak FORBIDDEN WORLDS "Timeless Tribe!" Conclusion

Art by Kurt Shaffenberger
Rod Merritt travelled to South America to investigate claims of an ancient civilization of immortals!
He discovers people who can metamorph into various forms including statuary, but seem to have a particular talent for transforming into animals including lions, jaguars, and rhinos!
While the rest of the expedition is slaughtered, Rod is kept alive at the behest of Leona, one of the leaders of the hidden people, who is attracted to him...
So, what did you expect?
A happy ending?
Not what writer/editor Richard Hughes and artist Ken Landau had in mind for this story from ACG's Forbidden Worlds #145 (1967).
Note: Despite his being "repulsed" at seeing Leona's true form, Rod accepts death as long as it's at her side.
BTW, here's the original art for that page...
Was Leona originally-conceived as being even more alien-appearing?
Did the Comics Code Authority make them tone it down?
We'll never know...

Halloween HeartBreak FORBIDDEN WORLDS "Timeless Tribe!" Part 1

The SubText of This Year's Halloween HeartBreak  has been "Not  What They Seem"!
And nowhere is that more accurate than in this two-part Halloween blogathon finale!
Impossible?
A human and were-cat in love is impossible?
Haven't we seen humans and vampires, humans and werewolves, humans and ghosts, even humans and ghouls/zombies all happily "getting busy"?
What could possibly prevent this kool coupling?
Or is there something else we haven't yet learned?
You'll know the startling truth only if you're here...tomorrow!

Halloween HeartBreak SUPERMAN'S GIRL FRIEND LOIS LANE "Witch of Metropolis"

This Scene Does Not  Occur in the Story Below...
...Sort Of!
Confused?
Well, you won't be after you witness the following astounding events...
Written by Otto Binder and illustrated by Kurt Schaffenberger (with some redrawing of Lois' face by either Ruben Moreira or Al Plastino), this story was popular enough to be reprinted in two of the legendary 80-Page Giants over the next decade, with its' second appearance in DC's Lois Lane #77-G39 (1967) putting it front-and-center of her weirdest tales!
Maybe we'll run "Ghost of Lois Lane!" next Halloween season!
Next Week: Another Spooky Story of Halloween HeartBreak!

TENDER LOVE STORIES "Spark of My Heart!"

What Does a Girl Whom Nobody Thinks of as a Girl Do...
...when the guy she's interested in doesn't even know she's alive?
That's what this never-reprinted tale about a guy, a girl, and gearshifts asks!
Written by May Sterling, penciled by Kurt Schaffenberger, and inked by John Celardo, this tale from Skywald's Tender Love Stories #4 (1971) was the final original story from the short-lived company's longest-running title!
While Schaffenberger and Celardo were both long-time pros who began their careers back in the Golden Age of comics, this is May Sterling's only writing credit!
Schaffenberger, in the 1950s and 60s, was DC's "go to" artist for female characters with long stints on Lois LaneSupergirl, and Mary Marvel as well as occasional assignments on Wonder Woman and Mighty Isis!
Oddly, he had very few actual romance comic assignments over his long career...
Is "May Sterling" a pseudonym, or was she a comics neophyte who went on to other things after this one script?
Sadly, we'll never know...

We don't know yet what we'll present, but we can guarantee...

Love in the Time of Covid-19 SUPERMAN'S GIRL FRIEND LOIS LANE "Snoopiest Girl in History!"

As the second wave of the CoronaVirus pandemic rampages across America (and the globe)...

...we return to disease-related romance stories, with this one featuring fiction's most famous girlfriend!
Lois Lane is responsible for CoronaVirus???
That's the only conclusion you can reach from this never-reprinted tale from DC's Superman's Girl Friend Lois Lane #56 (1965)!
What did writer Edmond Hamilton and illustrator Kurt Schaffenberger know 55 years ago that we are only now discovering???
Note: While comics have long been pre-teen/teen male-oriented, romance comics (and Lois Lane fits into that category) have been pre-teen/teen/young adult female-oriented!
So why make the heroine in a female-oriented book such a manipulative bitch?
I don't know, but it was successful enough to keep the book running from 1958 to 1974, with the strip continuing for another few years in Superman Family, which combined Lois, Jimmy Olsen, Supergirl, and a new series Mr & Mrs Superman, which featured the married 1940s Clark and Lois of Earth-Two!
Next Week:
Another tale combining Disease and Desire!
